Confession #86 - I Need Super-Stretchy Faith

Ever want to be a superhero with super special powers to take on the forces of evil and save humanity?  Who's your favorite female superhero?  As women these days we have so many to choose from.  There's Wonder Woman, Black Widow, Storm, Gamora, Electra and the list goes on.   Mine is....Dun-un-dun-ta-dah - Elastigirl!  Matriarch of the super-hero family, The Incredibles, Elastigirl can basically stretch and morph into any length and form with ease without falling apart.  She's also this super cool quick-witted, resourceful, talented, passionate, driven, and supportive wife and mom to three superhero kids.  To me she's close to perfect and while as wives and mothers we learn to be pretty flexible,  I never really imagined that in my relationship with God, He would call me to become more like her as well, that is until this morning's revelation. Let me preface  this by saying that my entire marriage my husband has worked  as a freela...

Confession #66 - "Go on Honey, take a chance!"

Ever see the movie "Coming to America"?  It's one of my favorites.  Eddie Murphy plays Prince Akeem from Africa who comes to Queens, NY to find a bride.  He pretends to be poor and gets a  job in a knock-off McDonalds where he meets Lisa, the owner's daughter, and falls in love.  Lisa falls for him too but when she finds out he's really a prince, she becomes apprehensive. While riding the subway Akeem proposes to Lisa.  She looks around at the passengers for advice and a lady answers, "Go on Honey, take a chance!"  Well that's what I'm faced with, sadly not a proposal from a prince, but a question, do I want to take a chance?  A big chance... Most people in my family like to gamble.  It's on both sides of my family, mom's and dad's, and yet me, ummm...not so much.  Risk taking is not my thing, infact I can count on one hand how many times I've been to a casino and I'm not jonesing to go back anytime soon.  Perhaps it's...

Confession #59 - At All Costs

OBEDIENCE .  This is not a very fun topic.  As parents we demand and expect obedience from our children. It comes at a cost of not doing things their own way for their own good.  Sometimes that's the cost we pay to obey God, and sometimes it seems like the cost is much more.... For months and months God had been instructing me to clear my plate.  I fought it and fought it, exhausting myself, and allowing family problems to increase.  So I partially obeyed.  See, I figured I could compromise and do only some of what God told me to do.  I even convinced myself that God couldn't be asking me to give up certain things because it's what He had called me to do in the first place.  It just didn't make any sense.  But the truth is God told me to CLEAR my plate, not to lessen my involvement, or get help, or hold onto things "just because", He said CLEAR it.  I did not obey completely...that is right away. It's kind of interesting when you t...

Confession #50 - A Real Test of Faith (Part II)

Continued from Part I ... Please know that although I've put so much of myself into my home, I see it as nothing more than a thing.  It doesn't define who I am, it isn't an idol and I don't worship it.  Therefore, if God chooses to take it away I'll be fine.  My joy comes from the Lord, the gifts He's given us and the people with whom I share them.  However, God has tested my faith with this home for the last five years and proved faithful over and over and over again.  So why should I believe that's He's not going to do any different this time???  Now normally I don't share when I think God is telling me He's going to work a miracle.  I usually just keep it to myself and wait and see what God does.  But this time, I'm not.  This time, I believe that God wants His glory to shine so brightly that there is no doubt that He was in charge.  I believe with every fiber of my being that God is going to work a...

Confession #49 - A Real Test of Faith (Part I)

Our Home Many months over the last five years, we have been in situations where we didn't know if we were going to be able to pay our bills.  And in many a post I have professed that God has made it possible to make all our payments each and every month since our financial crisis began.  So many times I thought our home would be added to the list of foreclosures.  But always God has remained faithful.  However, since last week I believe differently, I believe God is going to perform an outright miracle that no one will be able to refute God's hand in our situation... First, I'd like to take you on a short journey... Back in 1999 my husband and I purchased our home.  This is our first home and we thought we wouldn't be here more than 4-5 years.  Well 14 years, and lots of remodeling later and we are still here.  For this I thank God... I really like my home, it's small but it's warm an...

Confession #36 - That Ugly Green-Eyed Monster

Boy lately I've been feeling really sorry for myself.  More than that I've been entertaining that ugly green-eyed monster, jealousy.  The thoughts that have invaded my mind are, "Why can they succeed an not me?  Why do I have to struggle so hard?  I'm a good Christian and they follow the way of the world.  This stinks.  Life isn't fair!  It just isn't fair!"  Can you hear that teeny tiny violin playing my heart bleeds for you?  The radio station in my mind that I've been subscribing to this last week plays it over and over and over.  I'm spilling the beans because frankly, I'm seriously convicted.  I know that what I'm actually doing is failing to trust God.  I'm failing to remember that He will give me victory through prayer in the areas of my life that others seem to come by naturally or have a benefactor to run and assist them when they need it.  They may have human benefactors, but what I'm forgettin...

Confession #19 - Clean up this mess!

O ne night while tucking my daughter into bed, I reminded her that tomorrow morning she must clean up her room and put all her toys away.  She asked me if I would clean it up for her.  I said yes but only if she helps.  Then she sweetly replied, "Mommy, I'm going to pray to God to put them away for me so when I wake up the mess will be clean."  I giggled and thought how cute and said, "Well, I'm sorry honey, but God doesn't clean up our messes."  Funny thing, as soon as I verbalized that statement clarity came rushing into my mind.  You see, it wasn't too long before that night that I would spend my prayer sessions begging God to heal me.  I have a laundry list of health nuisances and issues that I frankly can just do without.  From obesity to diabetes to back problems I would pray for God to heal me.  I reasoned that if God could heal the woman from the story in Mark 5, because of her faith, than He could heal m...

Confession #18 - This is the stuff that drives me crazy

I n July our air conditioning broke, living in South Florida there's no option, we had to repair it.  About a month ago the outside handle on the passenger door of my  car broke off.  Our fourteen year old dog has health issues are piling up along with the vet bills.  A few weeks ago my car suffered a blow out on the highway resulting in replacing the two rear tires, and the next day my husband ran over a curb making it necessary to replace the two front tires.  Three days ago the inside handle on the passenger door of my car broke off so now unless you're Bo or Luke Duke your not getting in or out of that side.  And on Thursday our air conditioner broke again!  That morning I found myself listening to Francesca Battistelli: This is the stuff that drives me crazy This is the stuff that's getting to me lately In the middle of my little mess I forget how big I'm blessed This is the stuff that gets under my skin But I've gotta trust You ...
